Asphalt milling is a method for repaving a smooth asphalt surface without demolishing and repaving the entire asphalt base. Prior to the 1970s, the equipment for asphalt milling didn’t exist, and repaving a road or parking lot meant a total replacement of the surface and sub-base material. Not only is total replacement more costly in terms of materials, but it involves a much higher amount of labor. If the asphalt is largely intact deep below the surface layers, asphalt milling is a much more affordable and efficient method of repaving black-top surfaces than total replacement.

When is asphalt milling an option?

Most often, widespread damage is isolated to the surface layers, leaving the sub-base intact. In such cases, a milling machine can carefully and accurately break up the surface layer without damaging the sub-base below. Then, the new asphalt surface can be replaced with minimal material and labor expense – not to mention more quickly and affordably.

Reducing pavement height

Another purpose for asphalt milling is to reduce pavement height. This often occurs when multiple overlays have been laid down without removing the previous layers first. The result is a raised black-top surface, creating misalignment with the roads it connects to and leading to quicker damage as the older layers crumble and break down. Asphalt milling can remove the excess layers and allow us to replace them with a single, professionally laid asphalt layer.

Asphalt milling at scale

Most people have seen asphalt milling undertaken on long public streets, but it is just as useful for smaller sections of blacktop as well. An asphalt-milling machine can remove surface layers in a finely controlled area and depth to prepare the sub-base for our expert asphalt replacement and sealing services to ensure your asphalt lasts far into the future.
