Need asphalt work? Not all asphalt mixes are the same. There’s a reason why big jobs should be done in the warmer months, even though cracks and potholes can be repaired anytime. For the best results, you need the right type of asphalt for your project.
Summer asphalt
Summer asphalt is also known as hot or hot mix asphalt. It is mixed at 270 to 275 degrees Fahrenheit and has to be applied quickly. Quick application ensures that the material keeps at this temperature so that it fully adheres to the ground.
Just as the name suggests, summer asphalt needs to be used during summer, when the ground is warm and dry. With the relatively higher temperatures in these months, the mixture will not lose heat easily. This will ensure it does not lose its binding capability.
Generally, summer is the best time for paving large areas such as:
- Commercial parking lots
- Highways and public roads
- Large and long driveways
- Airport runways
Winter asphalt
Winter asphalt, also called cold mix aggregate, can be installed when the temperatures outside are low, such as January, February and March. This type of asphalt performs well in wet and cold conditions since it does not have to be heated constantly to adhere to the ground.
Winter asphalt is best for patching, so the mixture is often used for smaller jobs like repairing cracks and filling in potholes. This type of asphalt might not last as long as summer asphalt, but using it for winter repairs can help prevent injury, vehicle damage and additional surface weathering by providing a safer, smoother surface through the winter.
